Moving to London from Dubai or the UAE

Connect UAE departure administration with your London housing, work and family plans, without letting one set of dates outrun the other.

Relocation planning desk with a map, notebook and view of residential buildings

A move from Dubai or elsewhere in the UAE can involve several connected timetables: employment, residence arrangements, housing, school and your London arrival. The useful starting point is to map those dependencies before booking around a single target date.

This guide concerns your departure location. UAE residence does not determine your nationality or UK immigration rights. Check the arrangements for each person moving through the UK visa checker and seek regulated advice where necessary.

Run a departure plan and an arrival plan together

Use a simple tracker with an owner, due date and evidence of completion for every important task.

UAE departure questions London arrival questions
What has the employer or sponsor confirmed? When can each person travel and begin their intended activities?
Which residence arrangements need attention? What is the confirmed office location and work pattern?
What are the housing notice and handover requirements? Where will you stay first?
Which school records and final arrangements are needed? Which admissions route and school year need checking?
What happens to utilities, accounts and insurance? What needs organising for the first working week?

Keep a distinction between a request submitted and a process completed. Save confirmations where you can access them after departure.

Clarify residence and employment administration

For people ending a UAE residence arrangement, official UAE guidance describes formal cancellation and the sponsor’s role. The relevant procedure depends on your circumstances. Confirm the sequence with your sponsor and the competent authority, particularly where dependants are involved; do not assume a flight booking completes the process.

Use the UAE government’s residence guidance as a starting point. Ask for clear instructions about documents, timing and how the process affects the rest of your household. Relocation Ready does not manage UAE immigration or employment matters.

Rebuild the housing brief around London life

Start with the routine you need, rather than an attempt to reproduce your current property. Consider room use, storage, outdoor space, access and the journeys each person will make.

Ask whether a feature is essential or simply familiar. A household that currently drives most journeys may want to test a walking and public-transport routine. Another may genuinely need parking or accessible vehicle access. Both are legitimate requirements, but they produce different searches.

Compare actual addresses through the London area guide. Check the full journey, including walking and changes, at the time you expect to travel.

Plan for rental referencing from overseas

Request a written list of evidence from the letting agent. Ask how it assesses your employment, income, address history and references, particularly if you are changing employer or moving between contracts.

Do not rely on a large advance-rent offer to compensate for missing evidence. England’s rules for new assured periodic tenancies changed in May 2026. Read the current process in renting from overseas before making a payment commitment.

Keep income documents and legitimate reference contacts available after leaving the UAE. Send sensitive information only through a verified process, not to an unverified contact responding to a listing.

Build a family plan that includes records and routines

If children are moving, ask the current school about reports, transfer documentation and the practical timing of leaving. Check the London admissions process independently: current school curriculum or year labels do not by themselves confirm the next placement.

Think beyond the first school day. Who can manage collection while a parent starts work? What is the fallback if accommodation changes? Which familiar activities or contacts can continue during the transition?

Our family moving guide sets out the questions to ask before linking a housing decision to a school preference.

Test the financial transition

Prepare separate amounts for regular London spending and the cost of moving. Include any overlap between accommodation, final bills, deposits, flights and temporary housing. Confirm actual employer reimbursements rather than treating them as available cash before payment.

Your personal tax position requires individual advice. Do not assume your UK take-home income or cross-border obligations from your current UAE arrangements. We can help structure a practical plan, but not provide tax or financial advice.

A worked sequencing example

Hypothetical: one parent has a London start date while the household is still resolving UAE departure administration and school timing.

The family should compare arriving together with a staged move, including the extra accommodation, travel and caring responsibilities each would create. Neither option is automatically better. The decision needs confirmed permissions, employer arrangements and a workable plan for the child, not just a cheaper flight.

Your next steps

Confirm the employer/sponsor sequence, assemble departure records, build your London budget and decide what arrival accommodation you need. Then turn those answers into a search brief and a dated relocation checklist.
