Setting Up Utilities, Council Tax and Internet After Moving to London

A practical guide to setting up utilities, council tax, broadband and household bills after moving to London.

After moving into a London home, bills and setup tasks arrive quickly. The sooner you organise them, the sooner the property feels like yours.

Start with meter readings. Take photos on move-in day if you can. Confirm who supplies gas, electricity and water, then contact providers with your move-in date.

Council tax is handled by the local borough. You will usually need to tell the council you have moved in and set up payments. The amount depends on the property band and borough.

For internet, check what services are available at the address before assuming fast broadband is ready. Some flats have restrictions or existing providers. If you work from home, do this early.

Also check:

  • Contents insurance
  • TV licence if relevant
  • Mobile signal
  • Building management contacts
  • Bin collection days
  • Parking permits if needed

If you are renting, check which bills are your responsibility and which are included. Do not rely on assumptions.

The goal is not perfection. It is control. Once the essentials are in place, the move feels much calmer.
